Rape Crises

Recently I came across an article which was a compilation of comments made by various political leaders about rape and rape victims. From calling the rapists brother to keeping their knees closed, blaming western influences, or eating chowmein which causes hormonal imbalance in the body. What? I am not a judge but even I know that’s wrong. They keeping getting ridiculous to the point which makes you want to crack open their skull to see if they have a brain.

The only reason rapes occur is because of the rapists. That’s it. It’s not some mystery that you need a high functioning sociopath, *cough* Sherlock Holmes to solve it. Any sane logical person will be able to tell you that.

“Look for the rapist and not the reason.” — I’m sorry (Slam poetry )

Girls going out at night, wearing a short dress or traditional outfit, drinking, working, or eating chowmein are not asking for it. Boys will be boys or locker room talk are just excuses. While we allow boys to be boys, girls are not allowed to be girls.

Oxford dictionary defines rape as the forcing sexual intercourse upon another person without their consent or against their will.

It’s a crime against basic human rights.

Concept of consent.

Consent is agreeing to something in the same sense as the other person involved in it. It’s not that difficult to understand.

If you force that person to agree to something by physically harming them or otherwise it’s not consent.

If the person is under the influence of alcohol or drugs  it’s not consent.

If somebody agrees to do something once doesn’t mean they are agreeing to it for the next time.

If they are agreeing to something with another person doesn’t mean they will agree for it with you.

Ask first. Always ask first.

Maybe is not a yes. No means no. It’s not a challenge but an answer.

Rape is the 4th most common crime against women in India.

The most notorious rape case of Nirbhaya on 16 Dec, 2012. It led to mass protest, triggered domestic and global condemnation against violence towards women and children.  Even after more than 4 years has the condition improved?
Atleast 34,651 cases of rape were reported in India in 2015.

Our mentality towards this issue and rape victims definitely needs to change. Rape culture and slut shaming needs to be stopped. There is a need for open dialogues, support groups to help victims to curb this menance. The government needs to reevaluate it’s stand against rape and sexual violence. There is also a need to address martial rape and sexual assault against men. Section 375 of Indian Penal code needs to be improved. The concept of virginity tests needs to be abolished. The WHO has clearly stated that the concept of virginity tests has no place in modern medical practices, and the two-finger virginity test has no scientific validity, and is simply painful and distressing for the victim.

“Justice delayed is justice denied.”

There are a lot of aspects that need to be understood. This issue needs to be addressed as soon as possible to get rid of loopholes in the laws and deliver swift and right judgement.
